The Big Peace March
Saturday, March 15th : San Rafael

Next Generation and the Peace Action Group invite you to the Big Peace March: an inspiring, festive community rally and march for peace on the 5-year anniversary of the Iraq invasion.

11am - Noon: Music and gathering at the San Rafael Plaza (downtown next to Bank of America)
Noon - 1pm: Inspiring peace rally at the Plaza
1pm - 2pm: Positive, creative march through the streets
2pm - 4pm: Peace party at the Plaza featuring music, dancing and community

Join hundreds of others in this positive, hopeful rally, march and party for peace. As the President calls for increased war spending in Iraq and even pushes for an attack on Iran, our community is coming together to show that the American people stand strongly for peace.

The day will feature live music, inspiring speakers including peace activists, elected officials, students and faith leaders, and a creative march and community peace party at the Plaza. Join friends and neighbors for an intergenerational, local action - one of hundreds taking place nationwide to mark the 5-year anniversary of the Iraq invasion.

We encourage anyone who can to bike or walk to this event! Other great options are to carpool or ride the bus (click here for a Golden Gate transit schedule) with fellow community members. If you do drive, here's a map of parking stations in downtown San Rafael (likely your best bet on a Saturday).

Check out a few photos from last year's Big Peace March below. These photos were taken as hundreds of enthusiastic people of all ages rallied, marched and danced for peace in Marin beneath a sunny spring sky to the sound of beating drums and honking motorists. "Inclusive, joyous, festive, well-organized, multi-generational" - that's how one participant put it!

RALLY
After a morning of music by local musicians Shree Dove and Singing Bear, hundreds of people joined our noon rally for peace in Iraq. Speakers including County Supervisor Susan Adams, Mayor Larry Bragman, Pastor Sara Vurek, and Next Generation Director Roni Krouzman - as well as local youth, musicians and poets - inspired our intergenerational crowd to stand for peace.

MARCH
A Brazilian marching band led our colorful march for peace through San Rafael. Hundreds of people young and old carried colorful signs, waved peace flags and danced to the beating drums as we snaked our way through town. The response from motorists and passersby was overwhelmingly positive!

PARTY
After our exhilarating march, we concluded our day by making a human peace sign in the plaza, meeting with Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey and dancing to the upbeat music of the Tom Finch Band and the Lloyd Family Players. We thought it was important to heed the age-old adage, "If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution!"

There were so many amazing things about last year's Big Peace March, from the inspiring music and speakers to the incredible diversity of ages to the beautiful art and the exhilaration of marching in solidarity together. We also generated excellent media coverage. The Big Peace March was covered on the KTVU 2 evening news, as well as on KPFA and in the Marin IJ, helping to spread our message of peace to hundreds of thousands of people across Marin and around the Bay Area.

Thanks to all who helped spread the word, participated, and were there in spirit! And of course, join us for this year's Big Peace March on March 15th!

Here's what three participants had to say about last year's Big Peace March:

"I LOVED having so many young, passionate, involved people there. Made my Experienced Protester's heart SING!!! I loved seeing an older woman using a walker standing and swaying to the music. I loved it that little Sky Hawthorne brought up his handful of coins. I loved the inter-generational dancing. I loved the feeling of connection with everyone."
- Sara Vurek, Pastor, Fairfax Community Church

"Inclusive, joyous, festive, well-organized, multi-generational...thank you for organizing this great event!"
- Janet Shirley

"I wanted to tell you how fabulous I thought yesterday's peace march and rally were. I have attended almost all of the SF peace/anti-war rallies for the past four years (not to mention the Vietnam marches in the 60's). I was so delighted to listen to the speakers yesterday because they weren't shrieking rhetoric, but were reiterating their stand against the war and for bringing the troops home ASAP. It was a very positive day."
